Motiff Review
Can This AI Tool Replace FIgma?
In my previous post, I reviewed Creatie, a Figma clone claiming to offer AI features. However, after my review I found out that it wasn't actually using AI, which is frustrating when companies make such claims without delivering. This led me to discover another new tool called Motiff, which also positions itself as a Figma clone with AI capabilities. Released recently at Singapore's Super AI event, Motiff has garnered excitement in the design community.
AI Reduplication Feature
One of the features I tested in Motiff is the AI reduplication feature. This tool allows you to duplicate content by creating variations of it. In practice, it fills text areas appropriately but struggles with generating different images unless you're working within their playground file. It's a neat concept, but calling it AI is a stretch since it mostly relies on preset templates.
AI Layout Feature
The AI layout feature simplifies the Auto Layout process, which can be cumbersome in Figma. With Motiff, you can apply Auto Layout to an entire page, including nested elements, with just a few clicks. It’s efficient and works well with existing designs, but again, it’s more of an improvement rather than true AI.
AI Design System Creator
Motiff's AI Design System Creator promises to generate a design system from your files. It effectively extracts elements and organizes them into a new file, detailing usage and occurrences. However, this feature doesn’t utilize AI; it's more about understanding and organizing design data.
AI Magic Box and AI Generates UI
The Magic Box and AI Generates UI features were less impressive. The Magic Box attempts to fill selected areas with appropriate components but ends up pulling from a preset library. The AI Generates UI feature, while interesting, also relies on predefined elements, failing to truly interpret natural language prompts for unique designs.
Compatibility Issues
One major downside of Motiff is its lack of compatibility with Figma. While you can open Figma files in Motiff, exporting back to Figma is not supported. This makes it difficult to integrate Motiff into existing workflows, limiting its practical utility.
Final Thoughts
Motiff offers several features that mimic Figma but with a few added conveniences. However, the AI claims are largely overstated, with most features relying on pre-programmed functionalities rather than true artificial intelligence. If you're seeking a cheaper alternative to Figma, Motiff could be worth exploring. Just be mindful of its limitations, especially concerning file compatibility and the overhyped AI features.
